A Viscoelastic Model for the Long-Term Deflection of Segmental Prestressed Box Girders

Most of segmental prestressed concrete box girders exhibit excessive multidecade deflections unforeseeable by past and current design codes. To investigate such a behavior, mainly caused by creep and shrinkage phenomena, an effective finite element (FE) formulation is presented in this article. This formulation is developed by invoking the stationarity of an energetic principle for linear viscoelastic problems and relies on the Bazant creep constitutive law. Apodization of imaging systems by means of a random spatially nonstationary absorbing screen

The amplitude impulse response (AIR) of coherent imaging systems with random binary apodizers is analyzed. Formulas for the mean value and the variance of the AIR are derived for two statistical one-dimensional models of apodizers: (1) nonuniform low-density shot noise and (2) a nonuniform unipolar synchronous random process. We show that for both models a high signal-to-noise ratio is achieved within the central peak and the low-order sidelobes of the AIR. Apodizers based on the second model permit higher values of the signal-to-noise ratio than those based on the first one.

Spatial noise-aware temperature retrieval from infrared sounder data

In this paper we present a combined strategy for the retrieval of atmospheric profiles from infrared sounders. The approach considers the spatial information and a noise-dependent dimensionality reduction approach. The extracted features are fed into a canonical linear regression. We compare Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) for dimensionality reduction, and study the compactness and information content of the extracted features. Assessment of the results is done on a big dataset covering many spatial and temporal situations. The succinct metaphor, ‘the immune system's loaded gun', has been used to describe the role of mast cells (MCs) due to their storage of a wide range of potent pro-inflammatory and antimicrobial mediators in secretory granules that can be released almost instantly on demand to fight invaders. Two-view “cylindrical decomposition” of binary images

This paper describes the discrete cylindrical algebraic decomposition (DCAD) construction along two orthogonal views of binary images. The combination of two information is used to avoid ambiguities for image recognition purposes. This algorithm associates an object connectivity graph to each connected component, allowing a complete description of the structuring information. Moreover, an easy and compact representation of the scene is achieved by using strings in a five letter alphabet. Examples on complex digital images are also provided. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc.

Wi-Dia: Data-Driven Wireless Diagnostic Using Context Recognition

The recent densification of Wi-Fi networks is exacerbating the effects of well-known pathologies including hidden nodes and flow starvation. This paper provides an automatic diagnostic tool for detecting the source roots of performance impairments by recognizing the wireless operating context. Our tool for Wi-Fi diagnostic, named Wi-Dia, exploits machine learning methods and uses features related to network topology and channel utilization, without impact on regular network operations and working in real-time. Visual saliency detection in colour images based on density estimation

International audience; A simple and effective method for visual saliency detection in colour images is presented. The method is based on the common observation that local salient regions exhibit distinct geometric and and texture patterns from neighbouring regions. We model the colour distribution of local image patches with a Gaussian density and measure the saliency of each patch as the statistical distance from that density. Experimental results with public datasets and comparison with other state-of-the-art methods show the effectiveness of our method.

K-nearest neighbor driving active contours to delineate biological tumor volumes

Abstract An algorithm for tumor delineation in positron emission tomography (PET) is presented. Segmentation is achieved by a local active contour algorithm, integrated and optimized with the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) classification method, which takes advantage of the stratified k-fold cross-validation strategy. Real And Positive Filter Based On Circular Harmonic Expansion

A real and positive filter for pattern recognition is presented. The filter, based on the circular harmonic (CH) expansion of a real function, is partially rotation invariant. As it is real and positive, the filter can be recorded on a transparency as an amplitude filter. Computer simulations of character recognition show a partial rotation invariance of about 40°. Optical experiments agree with these results and with acceptable discrimination between different characters. Nevertheless, due to experimental difficulties, the method is onerous for use in general pattern recognition problems.

In this paper, we present a method for automated estimation of a human face given a skull remain. Our proposed method is based on three statistical models. A volumetric (tetrahedral) skull model encoding the variations of different skulls, a surface head model encoding the head variations, and a dense statistic of facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT). All data are automatically derived from computed tomography (CT) head scans and optical face scans.
